Beauty How-To: 5 Spring Hairstyles You'll Love From the Front and Back

  • Beauty How-To: 5 Spring Hairstyles You'll Love From the Front and Back

    The Slicked Knot

Created by hairstylist Luigi Murenu at Gucci. Step 1: Do a middle part, slicking in gel. Step 2: Make a pony at your nape, leaving out a one-inch section. Step 3: Pull the pony halfway through an elastic so you have a loop of hair with some leftover tail. Step 4: Wrap that tail, plus the one-inch section, around the loop and pin. Step 5: Pin in an extension (gel and flat-iron so it sticks up). A feather is cool too.

    • The Undone Bun

Created by Paul Hanlon at Marni. Step 1: Start with wet hair. Spritz in some beach spray, and blow-dry while roughing hair up with your fingers. Spray again. Step 2: Part hair to the side and pull back into a low, loose bun, leaving some pieces out (messy is good here). Step 3: Take any leftover pieces and wrap them around the bun. Step 4: Bobby-pin at the base to secure.

    • The Lush Halo

Created by Odile Gilbert at Cacharel. This one’s for superlong hair (or clip-in extensions). Step 1: Do a high pony. Step 2: Split tail into two sections. Step 3: Pin one section in a circle around the crown to create a halo. Step 4: Fold and flatten the other section so that it can tuck all around the inside of the halo with pins. Use a mirror to make sure you’ve covered the pony’s base.

    • The Half-Back

Created by Luigi Murenu at Pucci. This works on short hair too. Step 1: Flat-iron dry hair. Step 2: Spritz a brush with shine spray, and comb to tame flyaways. Step 3: Pull two-inch sections from the temples back with an elastic (or just with pins as far back as you can if your hair’s short—and then skip step 4). Step 4: Insert your pin of choice and weave a stick through.
  • The Half-Back

    • The Swoosh

Created by James Pecis at Antonio Marras. Step 1: Create a low side part. Step 2: Take out a section along your front hairline. Step 3: Pull the rest of your hair into a side pony and braid it. Step 4: Twist the braid up and over the top of your head, and pin in place. Step 5: Tease the front section, pull it up and back as shown, twist ends, and pin into braid. Step 6: Hairspray it like hell.

Wet look hairstyles were huge on the runway last year, and yet they’ve maintained their presence for 2013. It’s a trend you can’t miss: ponytails that sit low to the nape of the neck. 2013 haircuts

2013 haircuts

Thinking of getting a new haircut for 2013? Mid-length hair will always be an option, but if you want to go for something bolder perhaps a short hair cut – or a very long one – will take your fancy. As far as short haircuts in 2013 go, the bob is the winner over anything cropped, while for those managing to grow it long hair is still as desirable as ever.

The bob.

Bob hairstyles

In 2013, bob hairstyles are making their mark. They’re sprouting up on model influencers – from Karlie Kloss to Edie Campbell and Aline Weber – appearing in chin length, fringed versions as well as longer bobs that brush the shoulders. The short hair cut of 2013, the bob is back in a versatile and modern way.

Long hair.

At the other end of the extreme when it comes to haircuts in 2013: ultra long hair. Away from the bob, this is the best way for a hair cut to make a big impact. The trend on the runways suggests a hair length that just reaches or covers the breasts, since the look hints at something a little mythological (think ancient goddesses and mermaids) – anything longer starts to cross over into medieval maiden territory and begins to lose its raw sex-appeal.
Very long hair in 2013 can be cut in two main ways: blunt, or layered. The truth is that either can work equally well. If your hair is straight and all one length, a blunt can will mean you can work both a straight, sleek look and a more textured one. If you have some shorter layers – especially through the front – you’ve still got the right foundations for an on-trend long hairstyle. Since a lot of runway looks use extensions to achieve the right length (meaning there will always be some shorter, natural layers showing through) and because the most on-trend styles for long hair are the ones with plenty of volume and texture, it doesn’t matter if your hair is cut with some layers.

That said, the long 2013 hair cut isn’t one you want to thin out too much – remember it’s best with volume and texture – so the most on-trend way to have it cut is with a few choppy layers, not completely layered all over.
Whether side parted, center-parted, curled or straight, it’s worth knowing a few basic textured hairstyles for long hair. Here are some to try:

Tomboy hair

Much like fashion trends, the hair trends of 2013 have been strongly influenced by the styles on the runway. And in our numerous interviews with hair teams backstage at the shows, particular words have been bandied about again and again, a common thread of inspiration between shows in every city.
One of those words was tomboy. Boyish, another. Stemming from 2012 and carrying into spring 2013′s hairstyles, it’s hard to ignore the amount of effortless, cool, boyish hairstyles dominating the runways and the streets.

Tomboy hair: where it fits with fashion

If you were to simplify it, there were two main ways that boyish hairstyles for girls were being interpreted by high fashion this year. One is by pairing boyish hair with androgynous fashion for a complete, or near to complete, masculine look.

The other is to contrast highly feminine fashion with a contradictory hairstyle that’s careless and tomboyish.

Tomboy hair: the styles

There are countless variations on hairstyles that give off a tomboy vibe. Below we’re highlighting just a few as seen on the fall 2012 runways; styles that you can try at home (follow each link below for a how-to tutorial) or vary as you see fit to create new styles of your own. Some tomboy styles take inspiration from the refined, Dandy side of menswear – they’re perfectly slicked and clean and parted. But for the most part, in 2012, they’re about creating a look that’s effortlessly chic, as if you just rolled out of bed and whipped your hair into a fabulously boyish ‘do.

Gelled tomboy hair

From a slick, deep side part to a combed-back ‘do, a gelled hairstyle has its roots in the opposite gender. That’s not to say that all wet look hairstyles are boyish (some taking their cues from mermaids and ocean goddesses) but there are certainly those that are menswear inspired.
One to try: Jeremy Laing’s boyish half-slicked hairstyle (follow the link for a how-to guide) which deliberately opts for a bit of texture and tousle.

For a very slick, androgynous look the wet look ponytail is a must to master. From the front it’s all boy, culminating in a neat ponytail at the back. Follow the link for a tutorial based on the look at Anthony Vaccarello’s stern-yet-sexy fall 2012 collection.

Effortless tomboy hair

A little bit of texture and hair tucked casually – and practically – behind the ears. It may not be a style that borrows directly from the boys, but it’s a style that the tomboyish girl is well acquainted with. It’s no fuss, fancy-free, and she can wear it while kicking a ball with the boys.
Alexander Wang channeled that sentiment in his fall 2012 collection, creating an effortless tomboy hairstyle to go with the sporty-luxe clothing. Follow that link for a tutorial on creating the look.

When she does do her hair up, the nonchalant (yet stylish) tomboy is likely to opt for something like this: the tomboy ponytail as created for the runway of Paul Smith. It’s a little messy, a little voluminous, and a little bit sexy.

Retro tomboy hair

You couldn’t miss all the retro inspirations swirling through this year’s fashions. And with them: various takes on retro and rockabilly hair.
On the runways we paid particular attention to easy-to-create, modern updates on classic styles. Karen Walker gave the pompadour a fresh reworking in this messy, boyish half-up pompadour hairstyle. Follow the link for steps on recreating it.

Alexandre Herchcovitch meanwhile presented a look that merged a men’s quiff with sleek sides. It’s simple to achieve, too: you can read more about the smooth vs textured hairstyle at that link.

Tough and punky tomboy hair

Last but not least can a tomboy hairstyle lean to the tough side. This is for the girl who has a punk edge – or at least wants to add a punk edge as a contrast to her otherwise chic yet feminine getup.
For this, don’t look past a style like the knotted fauxhawk. It takes a little practice, but will make you stand out in a crowd if you can master the combination of neat sides and textured knotted center that make this look so striking.

1960s bouffant hairstyles

1960s bouffant hairstyles

What is a bouffant?

A bouffant hairstyle translates to a big hairstyle. To get this hairstyle the hair is teased leaving the crown of the hair looking really full or volumized. Today, bouffant hairstyles come in a variety of shapes and sizes but the effect remains the same: they exude confidence and class. On the runway for spring 2013 we’ve seen a number of key shows indulge in elegant, retro-inspired bouffants – most of them include a deep side part and plenty of volume.

1960s hair at Marc Jacobs

Staying true to the bouffant of the 60s, this hairstyle is teased on the crown of the head but what makes it different is the shape of the bouffant. The egg-like shape gives out a more modern and sleeker vibe as opposed to the traditional 60s bouffant.

Cute and quirky, this take on the bouffant features a headband with a bow. The hair is teased on the back part of the crown while bangs were recreated by making a side part and then bringing a section of hair across the forehead. The headband is then put into place right before where the volumized part of the hair starts.

Moschino’s 60s sex-kitten bouffant

Going for a sexier and bombshell look, Moschino created a bouffant look that has some curls in it. The hair is teased as usual and the the hair is tied into a half-pony. The effect is sophisticated yet sensual because of the curls that frame the face. When paired with big false lashes, the retro beauty effect is stronger than ever.

1960s beehive hair at Oscar De La Renta

This hairstyle is Holly Golightly with a twist – literally. Instead of just teasing the hair, more volume and style is given to this look by twisting the hair on top of the head where the bouffant is. Making this hairstyle stand out even more is the highlighted part of the twist. This pop of color is very 60s, very feminine and very chic; though of course as far as the trend goes, you could just as easily create a bouffant beehive style without the streaks of bold colour.
